AKC SCENT WORK SPORT

What is AKC Scent Work?

AKC Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Everything you need to know is in the AKC Scent Work Regulations Book linked below:

Titles /Rewards

AKC Scent Work Basic Elements & Levels

There are the four basic elements and levels for AKC titles. Once the dog has earn 3 qualified scores in the element at the same level of difficulty, the dog earns a title for that level of difficulty. New Level titles are earned when a dog titles in all elements within the same level of difficulty.

Interior Titles

Earn 3 Q Scores within the same Level

  • SIN Novice Interiors 
  • SIA Advanced Interiors
  • SIE Excellent Interiors
  • SIM Master Interiors

Exterior Titles

  • SEN Novice Exteriors
  • SEA Advanced Exteriors
  • SEE Excellent Exteriors
  • SEM Master Exteriors

Container Titles

  • SCN Novice Containers
  • SCA Advanced Containers
  • SCE Excellent Containers
  • SCM Master Containers

Buried Titles

  • SBN Novice Buried
  • SBA Advanced Buried
  • SBE Excellent  Buried
  • SBM Master Buried

New Level Titles

All 4 Element Titles within Same Level of Difficulty

  • Novice All 4 Titles: SWN 
  • Advanced All 4 Titles: SWA 
  • Excellent All 4 Titles: SWE
  • Master All 4 Titles: SWM


AKC Elite Element & Elite Level Titles

When a dog earns a element title and completes 10 qualified scores within the same element and difficulty level, they will be granted an Elite Element title. When a dog earns every Elite Element title in the same difficulty level, they will be granted the Elite Level title.

  • Elite Novice: SINE, SENE, SCNE, SBNE 
  • Elite Advanced: SIAE, SEAE, SCAE, SBAE
  • Elite Excellent: SIEE, SEEE, SCEE, SBEE
  • Elite Master: SIME, SEME, SCME, SBME

Elite Level Titles

Earn 4 Elite Element Titles within Same Level of Difficulty

  • Novice Elite All 4 Titles earns: SWNE 
  • Advanced Elite All 4 Titles earns: SWAE
  • Excellent Elite All 4 Titles earns: SWEE
  • Master Elite All 4 Titles earns: SWME


AKC Handler Discrimination

HD is a class where dogs must detect their handler's odor over the judge's odor. Dog must achieve three qualified runs at each level to earn an HD title. The levels are Novice, Advanced, Excellent and Masters.

  • SHDN Novice 
  • SHDA Advanced 
  • SHDE Excellent  
  • SHDM Master 

HD Elite Titles

HD Level Title & Earn 10 Q Scores within Same Level of Difficulty

  • SHDNE Elite Novice 
  • SHDAE Elite Advanced 
  • SHDEE Elite Excellent  
  • SHDME Elite Master


AKC Detective

The Detective Class offers an integrated search environment with an unknown number of hides in a variety of elements. The intent of the Detective Class is to emulate as closely as possible the work of a true detection dog. The Detective Class is open to dogs who have acquired at least one Master title in one of the four elements: SCM, SIM, SEM, or SBM
